The God Frequency

“Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the LORD our Maker; for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care." -Psalm 95:6-8 Have you ever thought about what kind of "frequency" heaven must have? I was doing a tutorial recently on the frequency rates of wireless devices. The information was fascinating! All these electro-magnetic waves traveling through the air that we can't even see. There is so much in our world that is invisible. This is true in heaven, too. Sometimes we get caught up in the worries of life. Sometimes someone angers us and we can't shake it off. Sometimes we are caught up in the world's pleasures. The state of our hearts ca

How to Host an Online Bible Study

Since the COVID-19 pandemic started, people have tried to find ways to do everything they used to do in person online. As cases are increasing again, we might be in for another round of social distancing. I know, I know, it's getting old. But, the scripture remains: "Do not neglect the gathering together." (Hebrews 10:25) I started a small online Bible study and invited friends on Facebook. Some of them, I had not even met in person before the study! It has been an awesome time of studying God's word, friendship, and prayer, in a time when people need connection and encouragement the most. This has been the format that has worked for us. 10 steps to start a successful online Bible study 1. P

Jump In

“Come, and follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men." -Matthew 4:19 Jesus was a no-nonsense kind of person. Whenever He said something, it had purpose. Jesus never did anything without purpose: He did what He saw the Father doing. (John 5:19) Additionally, he instructed people to jump all in - give it 110%, and never look back. "Don't take any money with you, nor a traveler's bag, nor an extra pair of sandals. And don't stop to greet anyone on the road." -Luke 10:4 We live in a different age than the time that Jesus was living. It would be considered 'unwise' to go somewhere without any money and expect people we visit to take care of us. But that doesn't mean we don't give Jesus ou

Go with the Cloud

“In all the travels of the Israelites, whenever the cloud lifted from above the tabernacle, they would set out; but if the cloud did not lift, they did not set out - until the day it lifted. So the cloud of the LORD was over the tabernacle by day, and fire was in the cloud by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel during all their travels." -Exodus 40:36-38 Have you ever heard the phrase 'go with the flow?' Well, surprisingly, this is a kingdom principle. When the Israelites were learning obedience in the desert, God taught them something very important: "Go with the cloud." God put a cloud over them by day; a pillar of fire by night to guide them. This cloud was always over the ta

Faith & Miracles

"So again I ask, does God give you His Spirit and work miracles among you by the works of the law, or by your believing what you heard?" -Galatians 3:5 Have you ever witnessed a miracle? I can't say that I've seen someone come back from the dead, though I have experienced what might be considered "smaller" miracles related to emotional healing, safety, and finances. Our level of faith is often equal to our experience. The enemy's purpose is to steal, kill, and destroy. He tries to get in the middle of our dreams by stealing our faith for our dreams. But then, God comes in and shows us how "anything is possible to those who believe." (Mark 9:23) Let me pose a question to you: What if our de

Becoming a Servant

“Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant..." -Matthew 20:26 When I was younger, I worked at various restaurants as a server. At first, I was petrified. I used to have a HUGE fear of people. So huge, in fact, I was afraid to answer the telephone as a child! Being a server, I had to come to terms with all of that. But, through it I learned to serve. I also learned to serve at the church I went to. Later when I got a job at a big department store known for customer service, one of the visiting CEOs asked me where I had worked before. When I told him I was a server, he replied: "Hmm. Great training!" If you want to have a bigger impact, find mor

Choosing God's Best

“Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour." -1 Peter 5:8 Sometimes when I think about the state of our culture, I feel burdened. When I see or hear about music video with lots of sex and violence and all of the millions of views these videos have on YouTube, it makes my heart heavy. "How many people are being led into things that are spiritually dangerous for them?!?" I think. The artists representing these videos do not care about the spiritual well-being of these millions of viewers, mostly young and impressionable. They do not have an awareness of the spiritual reality of what they are living out when t

The Son is Always There

“I will never leave you nor forsake you." -Hebrews 13:5b Have you ever seen the sun shine when it's raining? It is one of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen. The rain pours down with big grey drops and showers the earth with its downpour. But, as the sun peeks through, the raindrops that fall are no longer grey. They are bright and shimmering, like little yellow stars falling from the sky. Even through the clouds and the rain, the sun is able to shine. Often, we don't see the sun when it's raining. However, that doesn't mean it isn't there. In life, it takes rare perspective to realize the sun is still present despite the rain. Sometimes it's hard to see Jesus in the midst of our

Magnifying God vs. the Problem

“O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together.” -Psalm 34:3 Sometimes when we have a problem, we magnify the problem - or make it bigger in our minds than it may be in reality. We think about the problem and talk about all the different angels of the problem. But, when we do this, we may be putting the problem on a pedestal. Thought it is good to understand the problem, when does a focus on the problem become unhealthy? When the problem obscures our ability to step back and look at it from an objective perspective and we are not able to bring God into the mix, that is when we experience a problem with our problem! God says so often that we are to bring our worries and cares

Breaks in the Armor

"In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one." -Ephesians 6:16 Have you ever played a video game when your immunity shield went down? All of a sudden, you get hit, out of nowhere. And you had gotten so far too! But not only does your immunity shield go down - every hit and every punch you take now does 10 times the damage. And very quickly you die. No fun!! But do you know what? God has given us an immunity shield for this life, called faith. When we first come to Him, the shield is small, but with every revelation we receive from Him it is built up, more and more and more, until we are so strong with His truth

Sins of Omission vs. Commission

“By chance a priest came along. But when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by. A Temple assistant walked over and looked at him lying there, but he also passed by on the other side." -Luke 10: 31 & 32 We often hear about the seven deadly sins, or the "thou shalt nots" of the ten commandments. All of these things are essential to understand the difference between right and wrong, and avoid doing wrong. But, even if we don't do any of those seven deadly sins the Bible talks about and we are good people, if we're not living by the law of love, sadly we've missed the point. "One day a religious leader asked Jesus what he needed to do to earn et

Matured in Love

“Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church." -Ephesians 4:15 What does it mean to be mature in Christ? The Bible says Jesus is coming back for a "spotless" bride. (Ephesians 5:27) But, what does that mean? According to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, maturity is the quality or state of being mature, full development.* When we are mature, we are considered to be "grown-up". Also, when we are mature, we can reproduce ourselves, meaning, we can a disciple and be a care giver of people younger in faith. Just as we grow up in our natural development, we grow up in our spiritual development too. Th

"The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, 'Abba, Father.'" -Romans 8:15 Enric Siva is a survivor of the Rwandan Genocide of 1994. He and his family lived on a farm there, but during the raiding of their home, Enric's father and some of his siblings were murdered. Just 6 years old at the time, Enric and his brother escaped into the jungle and lived there for 3 months, surviving on fruits and vegetables for food. Eventually, they could not find any more food to eat, but found a Red Cross camp where they discovered that their mother was alive. Through an unfortu

A New Job Description

"Go and announce to them that the Kingdom of Heaven is near. Heal the sick, raise the dead, cure those with leprosy, and cast out demons. Give as freely as you have received!" -Matthew 10:7-9 Have you ever been given a new job description? Sometimes when we've been doing the same thing over and over change is refreshing - but it can also be scary and challenging at the same time! When Jesus assembled his new disciples, he gave them a mission, and a new job description. The Bible says He "gave them authority to cast out evil spirits and to heal every kind of disease and illness." (Matthew 10:1) And this was even before He had died and was raised from the dead! As Christians, God has also g

Degrees of Difference

He replied, "Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you." -Matthew 17:20 Isn't it amazing that just one degree warmer or colder water changes forms, from either frozen to liquid, or liquid to steam? Just one degree makes all the difference. This principle can be applied to our lives as well. What small changes can we make that will make all the difference? For me, if I wake up just 30 minutes earlier, it means I have time to write. For people trying to lose weight, it only takes eating 1 less thing in order to kick-start

"...and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed Him." -Matthew 4:22 There is a lot to be said for the word "immediately." Nothing defines us more than what's happening in the here and now. Our actions determine the content of our hearts, and the course of our lives. Sometimes when we want to do something important, it's difficult to know what needs to be done in order to get started. But in the Bible when the moment needed seizing, Jesus and his disciples took action immediately. "...and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him." -Matthew 4:22 "But Jesus immediately said to them: 'Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid.'" Matthew 14:27

The Prison Song

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. " -1 John 1:9 Once I met a lady friend named Kathy. Kathy is amazing! The day I met her, she told me the most incredible story. Her story was not only engaging but also imparted such wisdom and insight. "I was invited to sing for inmates with the prison ministry that is run by my church. I felt the Lord prompting me to accept the invitation, so I did. I had several songs prepared, but as I was driving to the prison, the Lord put 'Amazing Grace' on my heart to sing to the inmates, Kathy explained. "So, following the leading of Holy Spirit, I decided I would sing 'Amazing

Holy Fear

"But afterward Jesus found him in the Temple and told him, 'Now you are well; so stop sinning, or something even worse may happen to you.'" -John 5:14 Have you ever had a moment when you were really afraid of God? Not afraid as in being afraid of the dark... but knowing that God was not pleased with something you were involved in, and that it could put you in spiritual danger? I had such a moment when I was 16. I had been really seeking God out and had gone to a series of New Age events in an effort to find something "real". Well, it was real alright - I didn't know it at the time, but in reality a lot of the "real" stuff I was feeling spiritually was God, but there were a lot of familiar

Agreeing with God

“Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world." -1 John 4:1 Do you agree with God? This may seem funny to say, but each of us comes to Christ with a different perception of God, perhaps even a negative one. Subsequently, our thoughts about God and what He thinks of us is reflected in our lives to others. If we believe God is out to get us, we will think this about people in general too. We might even have a judgmental attitude toward them. However, in order to be effective conduits of God's love and grace, we need to agree with His TRUE nature! Through this process of understa

Overcoming Evil with Good

“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." -Romans 12:21 What does it mean to overcome evil with good? Many days it may seem as though we are being overcome by negativity. But, how do we get out of the mire? What did God have in mind for the way we should live our lives? I love the verses leading up to the scripture above: "Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves... keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord's people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse... If it i
